Abner C. "A.C." Harlan, 82, retired employee of Monsanto and lifelong resident of the family farm on Williamsport Pike, died Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Mt. Pleasant Healthcare & Rehab. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Melinda Britt and Rev. Chip Hunter officiating. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 11:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late A. C. Harlan and Ozell Harlan. He was a 1953 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mr. Harlan loved working on the family farm and seeing the fruits of his labor mature. He was also an avid car enthusiast. He attended First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Couch Harlan of Columbia; sons, Don (Tammye) Harlan of Franklin and David (Lorraine) Harlan of Jackson; grandchildren, Campbell (Lindsay) Harlan, Anne Park Harlan, Matthew Harlan, Faith Harlan; step-daughters, Holly (Gilly) Conners and Hynie (Dave) McDowell; step grandchildren, Gilmore Conners, Rebecca Conners, Virginia Conners, Gracie McDowell, Porter Armstrong, Emmaclaire Armstrong, and Mimi McDowell; sister, Lois Harlan (Gillie) Orr; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Edward "Bubba" Harlan; sister, Katherine "Sister" Scott; wife of twenty-four years, Janette Johnson Harlan; stepson, Maury Armstrong, Jr.; and step grandson, Benjamin Armstrong. Active pallbearers will be Ed Harlan, Al Harlan, Patrick Harlan, Porter Armstrong, Thomas Bellafant, Richard James, Andy Harlan, Campbell Harlan, and Matthew Harlan. Honorary pallbearers include retired employees of the Nodulizing Department of Monsanto. The family would like to thank Dr. Cummins Couch for the loving care he has provided the past few weeks along with the staff at Morning Pointe of Columbia and Mt. Pleasant Healthcare and Rehabilitation. You all are a true blessing and a gift from God !!
