View Funeral WebcastVictor Albert Compton, 88, retired from Norton & Steeley Wholesale Grocers and resident of Carol Drive, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West 7th Street Church of Christ, 405 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Giles County native was the son of the late Virgil Merritt Compton and Ethel Davis Compton. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded two bronze stars. As a young man, he worked for Borden's Milk Company and Lowenthal Sweater Company, and later Uncle Charlie's.Mr. Compton was a long-time member of West 7th Street Church of Christ and was a former deacon. He was married May 24, 1943 to the former Jean Davis. Mrs. Compton died October 13, 2000. Survivors include his son, Kenneth (Frances) Compton; grandchildren, Jason (Sheree) Compton, Joanna (Steve) Huff, Jon (Lana) Compton, and Jordan Compton; great-grandchildren, Ethan Compton, Summer Compton, Jackson Huff, all of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Michelle Compton; a sister and nine brothers. Active pallbearers are Jason Compton, Jon Compton, Jordon Compton, Steve Huff, Jimmy Compton, and Stan Pinkleton. Members of West 7th Street Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
