View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Alex Cothron, Jr., 91, retired from Bell South Telephone Company and resident of Lyon Street, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Morning Pointe Assisted Living. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Mark Proctor officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors at graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Alex Cothron, Sr. and Ora Lee Stultz Cothron. In July 1938, he married the former Sarah Frances Gray. Mrs. Cothron, a well-known sales lady in downtown Columbia for many years, preceded him in death November 12, 2001. Mr. Cothron served in the U. S. Army during World War II. As a member of the 246th Signal Operation Company, he swam to shore on Omaha Beach where he was assigned the important task of establishing lines of communication for the invading forces on D-Day. He was awarded five Bronze Stars during his service. He was a long-time member of Highland Park Baptist Church, Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, and Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include his son, James Alex "Jim" (Susan Dugger) Cothron, Sr. of Columbia; grandsons, James Alex (Lori) Cothron, Jr. of Franklin, Lon Allen (Trena) Cothron of Franklin, Thomas Brentford Cothron of Murfreesboro, and Sean Paul (Brandi) Cothron of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Kristen (Justin Conn) Cothron, Rebecca Lauren (Jeff) Cottam, Alex Connor Cothron, Ryan Tuck, Courtney Elizabeth Cothron, Baylee Elise Cothron, Jordon Michelle Cothron, Brittany Kayla Cothron, R. J. Toler, and Sydni Lynn Cothron; sisters-in-law, Grace Cothron and Dorothy Gray. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Greenfield and brother, William Lon Cothron. Active pallbearers are James Alex Cothron, Jr., Lon Allen Cothron, Thomas Brentford Cothron, Sean Paul Cothron, Ryan Tuck, R. J. Toler, Jeff Cottam, and Justin Conn. Honorary pallbearers include Paul Dugger, Jr., Eddie Russell, Alex Connor Cothron, Donnie Joe Cothron, James Gray, Bill Gray, Charless Moss, Mike Moss, Ray Adams, Mike Hill, Patrick Adams, James Hardison, Billy Ray Hardison, and members of Telephone Pioneers of America.
