View Funeral Webcast Alice Holden Garner, 98, former long-time resident on her farm on Garner Road in the Hampshire Community and more recently Locust Street in Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Sterling House. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Jim Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Will Holden and Lillie B. Rochelle Holden. For many years, she was butcher and clerk for Fitzgerald's Grocery. On February 27, 1937 she married George Henry Garner, long-time farmer and Mt. Pleasant police officer. Their fifty-seven year marriage ended with his death July 10, 1994. Survivors include two sons, Wayne (Linda) Garner of Columbia and John (Judi) Garner of Jackson; grandchildren, David (Missy) Garner of Memphis, Chris (Cindy) Garner, and Shane (Candi) Garner of Columbia; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Garner, Patrick Garner, Chance Garner, Chase Garner, Whitney Garner, Austin Garner, Madison Garner, and Ali Garner; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Holden Church and Elease Holden Flowers; four brothers, William Holden, Hughes Holden, Dude Holden, and Ross Holden; sisters-in-law, Geneva Holden, Opal Holden, and Marie Holden. Active pallbearers are Chris Garner, Shane Garner, David Garner, Ray Holden, Larry Holden, Mike Holden, Doug Church, and Joe Holden. The staff of Sterling House will serve as honorary pallbearers.
