Mrs. Bessie Thompson Dungy, 94, retired homemaker, babysitter, and resident of Woodmont Drive, died Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Life Care Center of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Henry Mobley officiating. Burial will follow in Andrews Cemetery. Born July 31, 1919 in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lee Thompson and Lena Andrews Thompson. On September 23, 1940 she married Thomas Edward "T. E." Dungy who preceded her in death on March 3, 1969. Having worked in child care for several years, she was affectionately known as "Aunt BB" and "Nanny". Mrs. Dungy was an excellent seamstress and a great cook. She enjoyed farming, gardening, and sharing her canned vegetables with family and friends. She was very devoted to her God and was a faithful member of Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Bethany Dungy and Patricia Adkins, both of Columbia; five sons, Gary Michael (Linda) Dungy and Dennis Wayne (Debbie) Dungy, both of Columbia; Jesse Edward (Wanda) Dungy of Hendersonville, North Carolina; Wendell Ray (Betty) Dungy of Valdosta, Georgia; Joey David (Karen) Dungy of Cottontown, Tennessee; step-daughter, Joy Evelyn Hammel of Bedford, Indiana; nineteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and twelve great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Lee Dungy; daughter, Lena Sue Dungy; twin brother, Jesse Thompson; sisters, Ethel Hood, Maude Armstrong, Alice Mullinax; and two great grandchildren, Kyle and Kelly Anderson. Active pallbearers will be Mitch Mobley, Larry Baxter, Jr., Jason Webb, Jonathan Francis, Lance Malcolm, Wayne Vun Cannon, and Jim Guthrie. Honorary pallbearers will include all "her children" that were entrusted to her care throughout the years.
