Betty Dodson Blackburn

February 12, 1930 — April 29, 2015

Mrs. Betty Dodson Blackburn, 85, resident of Santa Fe Pike, died Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jeremy Butt and Wayne Hardison officiating. Burial will follow at Santa Fe Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 3 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native, known affectionately by her family as "Bebe", was the daughter of the late Virgil Leon Dodson and Sarah Frances Kinzer Dodson . She was Valedictorian of the 1947 graduating class of Santa Fe School and in that same year won the title of Santa Fe Mule Day Queen. On March 23, 1950 she married Mathew Thomas Blackburn, Jr. who preceded her in death October 4, 1987. Mrs. Blackburn first worked at DuPont but soon became a hairdresser which she happily did for fifty years. She was a member of Northview Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Kaye Blackburn Pitts of Columbia; son, Tommy (Bonnie) Blackburn of Columbia; grandchildren, Ben (Jerusha) Pitts, Brooke (Chuck) Nixon, Marina Kaye Blackburn all of Columbia; great grandchildren, Jaye Pitts, Quinn Nixon, Kaiden Blackburn, Eli Blackburn; brother-in-law, Jim Blackburn of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Margaret Vincion and Juanita Roberts both of Columbia; and nephew, Michael (Vicki) Dodson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Leon Dodson, son-in-law, Cecil Edward Pitts and a grandson, Mathew Floyd Blackburn. Active pallbearers will be Hal Holcomb, Mike Joyce, Tommy Carpenter , Jason Carpenter, Michael Dodson and Jimmy Dodson. Honorary pallbearers include Janice Clevenger, Carolyn Turnmyre, Madison Dodson and Jim Blackburn. The family wishes to express special thanks to neighbors and friends who faithfully visited and called for five long years while Betty was homebound and also special thanks to Dr. Olivia Johnson, Dr. Ben Gardner, the staff of Hospice Compassus and to the 3rd Floor A Station of nurses and techs for their wonderful care.
