Betty Lynn Brooks, beloved sister, aunt, friend and community member, passed away peacefully in Nashville, TN, at age seventy-five. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Hunter Brooks and Frances Harbison Brooks; and her brother, William Lloyd Brooks (“Bill”). She is survived by her brother, John Brooks III (Andrea) of Nashville, TN; her sister, Carole Brooks Galyon (John), of Knoxville, TN; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Dortch Brooks of Nashville, TN. Betty is also survived by a great network of extended family, including many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she called family.
The third of four children, Betty grew up in Nashville, TN, where she attended John Overton High School and then graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1972. She worked for many decades alongside her father and brother at the Young Sales Corporation, as well as many years as a preschool teacher at St. George’s Kindergarten, where she came to know and cherish many families and those relationships. Betty was a proud member of the Nashville Girls Cotillion, where she found joy in serving and connecting with her community just as she had as a member of Belmont United Methodist Church.
Betty enjoyed storytelling, current events, and was an avid sports fan—particularly baseball. She was a devout University of Tennessee sports aficionado and also supported any MLB team on whose roster her hometown favorite R.A. Dickey appeared. Betty adored her family and especially enjoyed watching her great-niece and great-nephews grow up. She had a quick wit and could carry a room with belly laughter that will echo in our memories! Betty gathered wisdom (and a touch of delightful gossip!) from her years absorbing stories while attending Trumps Salon & Spa of Green Hills. Above all, Betty's greatest joy was her family. She earned the self-appointed nickname of “Favorite Aunt Betty” as she treated her niece, nephews, and her first cousins once removed—Jay, Clare, and Jane Coleman—as her own children. Our family is profoundly grateful for the unwavering friendship of Madeline Bell and Anita Schmid, whose support and compassion have been a true blessing, especially in recent times.
