Born September 11, 1934 in Giles County, Betty was the daughter of the late Houston Sands and Lucille Richardson Sands. She was a 1952 graduate of Jones High School where she played basketball and was a drum majorette. She was blessed to have found love twice in this lifetime, with the late Richard "Sonny" Smith and the late I. H. "Fuzz" Landers. Betty was an avid U.T. Lady Vols basketball fan. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles, but her true passion was always talking care of her family. She had a unique sense of humor and could always be counted on for an easy smile and a hearty laugh. Whether it was taking on the phone with a friend or relative, visiting with a friend while getting her hair done, or playing a game of Canasta with her great granddaughter, Betty knew how to make people feel loved, and she shared that love generously. Her children will remember her as a wonderful mother who gave selflessly and loved endlessly. She leaves being a legacy of strength and love that is woven together by the threads of each of her family members. She was a member of First Assembly of God. She is survived by son, Wayne Smith of Columbia; daughters, Yvonne (Larry) Moore of Lynnville and Jeanne (Rob) Mercer of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama; grandsons, David Smith of Chapel Hill, Chris (Dedra) Campbell of Lynnville, Rob (Jean) Graham of Madison, Alabama; and great granddaughter, Chloe Campbell of Lynnville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Houston Mac Sands and sister, Ann Sands Wilburn. Pallbearers will be Rob Mercer, Rob Graham, David Smith, Chris Campbell, Dennis Moore, and Sonny Hargrove.
