View Video TributeView Funeral WebcastMrs. Betty Broadway Smith, 80, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at her residence in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Gleaves officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1864, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Elkton in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Allie and Ellis Wilburn Broadway. She was a 1951 graduate of Elkton High School. On June 14, 1961 she married Larry Morris Smith who preceded her in death on November 7, 2006. Mrs. Smith was retired from South Central Bell where she had been a telephone operator for many years and was a member of the AT&T Pioneers of America. She was a loving mother and grandmother who was very active in her family's lives and never missed her grandchildren's sports activities. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church where she taught the 4 & 5 year old Sunday School Class for over thirty years. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Rick Swayze of Thompsons' Station; sisters, Nell Gilliam of Columbia, Ruby McJunkin of Nashville; grandchildren, Brandon Swayze, Chase Swayze, Brittany Swayze all of Thompsons' Station; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Elaine Smith Jett of Pulaski; and niece, Amanda Jett Parker. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lessie Pope, Bessie Case, Gladys Broadway and a brother, Grady Broadway. Active pallbearers will be Brandon Swayze, Chase Swayze, Jackie Case, Jerry Case, Mike Case and Tommy Pope. Honorary pallbearers include Doug Jett, Winfield David Williams, T.J. McCoy, Dakota Brown, Matt McJunkin, Terry Lane Pope, past and present students of the 4 & 5 year old Sunday School Class at Northside Baptist Church and members of the AT&T Pioneers of America.
