View Funeral WebcastBettye Jean Bassham Cornwell, 86, former resident of Maple Court, died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Lakeshore The Meadows in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be extended at www.oakesandnichols.com. The family suggests memorials to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or Lipscomb Academy, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville, TN 37204. Born and reared in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bassham and Nannie Frizzell Bassham and a 1947 graduate of Haylong High School. She married Ernest Howard Cornwell on November 27, 1947. For 31 years, they owned and operated Norton & Steely Wholesale Grocery. Mr. Cornwell died October 1, 1990. She was very active in the lives of her children and their activities, including work with the PTA and serving as Band Mother. She loved to travel, and enjoyed sewing, collecting antiques, and "socializing." Mrs. Cornwell was a devoted member of Graymere Church of Christ and participated in many of the churches programs and projects. She was a member of the Wendell Robinson Sunday School Class and made several mission trips with other church members. Survivors include her son, Randy (Nancy) Cornwell of Nashville; sister, Joyce (David) Hughes of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Pete (Judy) Bassham of Niceville, Florida, Jimmy Bassham of Columbia, Tommy (Loretta) Bassham of Columbia, and David (Vicki) Bassham of Columbia; grandchildren, Rebecca (Micheal) Runions of Mt. Pleasant and Scott Hardison of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Runions and Blake Runions; many nieces and nephews; and long-time friend, Jackie Hill. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Faye Cornwell Hardison; sisters, Sue Plew and Jane Peden; and brother, Charles Bassham. Serving as pallbearers are George Brazelton, Joel Oswalt, Ray Locke, Buddy Rogers, Pete Bassham, Jimmy Bassham, Tommy Bassham, David Bassham, Barry Jones, Scott Hardison, and Brian Bassham. The family wishes to express appreciation to Christy and the staff of Christy's Sixth Street Restaurant & Café for their many kindnesses.
