View Funeral WebcastMr. Billy Shannon "Hoot" Gibson, 79, retired from South Central Bell and resident of Pickens Lane, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Sidney Odell Gibson and Pearl Shannon Gibson. He was a 1950 graduate of Columbia Central High School. On January 8, 1951 he joined the U.S. Navy and served 4 years during which time he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Trathen, and then was assigned to the U.S.S. Manchester seeing active duty during the Korean War. He received the National Defense Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, The Korean Medal and the United Nations Medal. On April 10, 1954 he married Anne Dodson Gibson who survives him. He went to work for South Central Bell in 1954 and retired in August 1992 after 38 years. He was active in the Columbia National Little League and coached the Civitan Team with Virgil Priest. Mr. Gibson was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 and the Telephone Pioneers. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors in addition to his wife are three sons, Sidney Wilkes (Sandy) Gibson of Manchester, Robert Anthony (Melanie) of Culleoka, Bill (Dana) Gibson of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Chris Gibson, Chad Gibson, Adam Gibson, Cody Gibson, Jonah Gibson, Allison Gibson and Candice Gibson; and two great-grandchildren, Trenton Lane Gibson and Carma King. He was preceded in death by a sister Marjorie Faye Gibson and a brother Sidney Wayne Gibson. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chris Gibson, Chad Gibson, Adam Gibson, Cody Gibson, Jonah Gibson and Charlie Huffman. Honorary pallbearers will be Bennie Morton, Calvin Dodd, Dennis Thrasher, James Fraser, Mike Carter, Jerry Jeter, Ronnie Richardson and retired and present employees of South Central Bell.
