View Video TributeMr. Birney Wagner Alphin, 94, former resident of Columbia, died Monday, December 16, 2013 at Williamson Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 101 Legends Club Lane, Franklin, TN with Rev. Chris Joiner officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the church. Graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Worley Cemetery in the Hampshire Community with David Davidson officiating. Military honors will be provided at the graveside by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. The family suggests memorials to Alzheimers Association of Middle Tennessee, 4825 Trousdale Drive, Suite 220, Nashville, Tennessee 37220. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Dyer County native was the son of the late Birney Alphin and Florence Gertrude Wagner Alphin. He graduated from Trimble High School in Dyer County and Business college in Memphis. Mr. Alphin served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. in Bermuda during World War II. On May 6, 1953 he married Sara Cathey Alphin who preceded him in death October 30, 1995. He was Vice President of Production Planning and Coordination for U.S.S. Agri-Chemicals, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Alphin was a member of the American Legion and was a very active volunteer with the Alzheimers Association. He enjoyed photography, gardening, hiking and the outdoors and was an excellent cook.Everywhere he lived his church life was a priority. While in Atlanta he was an active member of Druid Hills Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. From 1985 until 1999 he lived in Columbia and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. In 1999 he moved to Franklin and moved his church membership to First Presbyterian Church in Franklin. Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth (David) Mundie of Nashville; grandchildren, Sara (Paul) Balsom of Chicago, Illinois, Bryan (Lydia) Mundie of Atlanta, Georgia; great grandchild, Sara Rose Balsom of Chicago; sister-in-law, Tennie Chaffin of Columbia; several nieces and nephews, Gilbert Cathey, Frank Cathey, Earl Cathey, Shirley Boshers, Nancy Cosgrove, Susan Chaffin; and several great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence (brother-in-law, Robert) Woods.
