Bob D Kannon

Mr. Bob D. Kannon, 96, resident of Gulfport, Mississippi, died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, December 5, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Pleasant Mount Cemetery with Rev. William Rolman officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born June 9, 1918 in Winter Garden, Florida, he was the son of Maury County natives, the late Bernie Kannon and Mattie Denton Kannon. His parents and grandparents helped settle the little town on the shore of Lake Apopka, Florida and farmed the rich soil on the lake. After graduation he worked on the farm for a few years then joined the Navy in 1937, serving on the USS Melville. In 1947 he transferred to the U. S. Army retiring active duty in 1954 as a Master Sergeant and was discharged from the U. S. Army Reserves in 1968. His wife, Sallie, and his four sisters preceded him in death.
