View Funeral WebcastCarles Guy Young, 92, retired IRS agent and resident of Trotwood Avenue, died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Steven Boshers officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Gideon's International, Shelbyville Gideon Camp, P. O. The Maury County native was the son of the late Joe Thomas Young and Lois Lindsey Young. He was drafted into the U. S. Army at age 22, October 1942, and served with the 83rd Division, 330th Battalion, Co. "D" Infantry. On July 18, 1944, he was wounded by shrapnel from a German 88 shell in his left leg and right arm, and spent the next several months in various hospitals and was honorably discharged May 31, 1946. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, as well as other medals for qualifying to fire certain weapons. After the war, Mr. Young returned to Columbia and furthered his education at Columbia Business College and then Steeds College of Technology in Elizabethton, Tennessee where he earned a BS in accounting and a teacher's certificate. He taught accounting at Columbia Business College for seven years before joining the IRS in 1957 where his career spanned twenty-six years until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Young was an avid fisherman, hunter, and enjoyed farming and raising a garden each year. After his retirement, he enjoyed camping at Natchez Trace. He was a charter member of Columbia Chapter #22 Disabled American Veterans which was established in 1949. He was also a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene for over sixty years. Survivors include his wife whom he married October 13, 1945, Mildred Frances Demastus Young of Columbia; sons, Jerry Wayne Young of Columbia; Dennis Ray (Kay) Young, Sr. of Shelbyville; sisters, Mary Helen Ericsson of California; Faye Jones of Goodlettsville; Juanita (W. L.) Boshers of Columbia; grandchildren, Dennis Ray Young, Jr. and Regan (Todd) Rooks, both of Murfreesboro; great grandchildren, Robby Young, Tre Young, Maela Rooks; uncle, Claudie Lindsey of Columbia; and aunt, Virginia Lindsey of Columbia; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by brothers, Fred M. Young, Glen Young, J. B. Young, L. G. Young; and a sister, Tommie Bolton. Active pallbearers will be Frank Lindsey, Billy Ray King, Mike King, Mark King, Chris Bolton, and Bryan Jones. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class at Grace Church of the Nazarene.
