Ruth Carolyn Murray Outlaw, retired teacher and longtime resident of Columbia, died Monday, February 29, 2016 at Abe's Garden at Park Manor in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 12:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with The Reverend Rob Courtney officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Churchyard. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home. A native of South Mississippi, she was reared in the Hattiesburg and McComb areas; and after attending Mississippi Southern College, she taught in Biloxi Public Schools. During World War II, she was an instructor at Keesler Field Technical Training School. After relocating to Columbia in 1955, she taught twenty-seven years at Riverside Elementary School where she received the Lifetime PTA Membership Award. In 1976 she was elected Maury County Teacher of the Year and was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Spring Hill. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Outlaw of Nashville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Murray; brother, J. R. Murray, and longtime friend, Arnall Peery. Active pallbearers will be Steve Hill, Cliff Walker, Jason Bobb, and Charles Bills. Honorary pallbearers include Mr. & Mrs. Jim Reedy, Jeff Binkley, Jerry Colley, Randy Stevens, retired teachers, and former fourth grade students at Riverside Elementary School.
