View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast Cary Woods Armistead, 80, retired educator and librarian, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Poplar Estates where he had made his home for the past several years. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will follow in Neapolis Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 9:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born June 21, 1934 in Maury County, he was the son of the late John Oliver Armistead and Daisy Bell Dean Armistead. The 1953 graduate of Spring Hill High School earned his Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1956, and his Master's degree from Auburn University in 1960. He did post graduate Library Education Studies at University of Georgia (Rome Center) in the summer of 1965. Mr. Armistead taught school six years in Tennessee, including one year at Columbia Central High School and one year at Columbia Military Academy. His teaching career also included one year in Virginia, one year in Alabama, and six years in Georgia where he retired from the Cartersville, Georgia Board of Education. He was a member of the West Seventh Street Church of Christ Poplar Estates congregation. Survivors include his twin sister and her husband, Mary & David Koltenbah of Muncie, Indiana; sister-in-law, Sharon Armistead of Acton, Massachusetts; brother-in-law, Hayes Westmoreland of Chapel Hill; nieces and nephews, Denise Westmoreland Liles of Mt. Pleasant, Phil Westmoreland of Chapel Hill, Julia Koltenbah Gant of Tampa, Florida, Sarah Koltenbah Hersey of Muncie, Indiana, Benjamin Koltenbah of Seattle, Washington, Cheryl Armistead Condon of Upton, Massachusetts, Karon Armistead Hough of Ocean, New Jersey; and several great nieces and great nephews. He is also survived by his special caregiver and friends: Gladys Barner, Beverly Webb, and many other caring friends at Poplar Estates where he has resided since 2001. He was preceded in death by one sister Martha A. Westmoreland and three brothers Glenn W. Armistead, John Lewis Armistead, and James Walter Armistead.
