Mrs. Catherine Alma Raiford Barnett, 89, died Monday, August 4, 2014 at her residence on Double Branch Road. The Norfolk, Virginia native was the daughter of the late Richard Harvey Raiford and Anne Dora Gray Raiford. She graduated from high school in Norfolk and attended Madison College for Women in Madison, Virginia. On April 30, 1945 she married James Leon Barnett who preceded her in death on August 10, 1977. Mrs. Barnett lived in Tampa, Florida from 1958 until 1970 when she and her family moved to Columbia. She was a homemaker who loved flowers, gardening and reading and was a member of the Maury Regional Hospital Auxillary where she earned her 2000 hour pin. She was a longtime member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and was a former member of the Altar Guild. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Anne (Robert) Kirker of Tampa, Florida; sons, Richard Eugene Barnett, David J. "Jeff" Barnett, Robert Edward (Rebecca) Barnett all of Columbia; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Ron Sims of Anniston, Alabama; brother-in-law, L.E. (Pat) Barnett of Hohenwald; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathy Barnett Sims and Nancy Lee Barnett; son, James L. Barnett, Jr.; grandson, John Sims; three sisters, Louise, Virginia and Martha and two brothers, Edward and Robert. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. John Simmons, and to Barbara Rowe who was her dedicated caregiver for the past year and a half, and to Hospice Compassus for their care and concern for the past two months. Mrs. Barnett had requested to be cremated and her cremains taken to a very special place in Florida where she and her family had vacationed many times.
