Catherine Latham

August 30, 1927 — September 9, 2015

Catherine Walton Latham, 88, retired teacher and longtime resident of Old Williamsport Pike, died Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Chip Hunter and Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church for Missions, 222 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or Maury Regional Healthcare Foundation, 1224 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles Douglass Walton and Louise Orr Walton. On July 9, 1949 she married Roy Wilkes Latham who preceded her in death on March 14, 2001. A graduate of Hay Long High School in Mt. Pleasant, she earned a Bachelors Degree from Vanderbilt University, and earned a Masters Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Mrs. Latham taught Math and Algebra at Whitthorne Middle School for thirty years. In addition to teaching, she farmed with her husband; and prior to their marriage, the two of them built their own log house. Truly an "outdoorswoman", she enjoyed riding horses, fishing, and hunting. She taught her grandchildren how to shoot and went on several hunting trips with them. A member of First United Methodist Church, she was very active with the Young at Heart and the Ayers-Whitney Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Latham was also a volunteer with the Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and active in the Maury County Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her daughters, Cathy (Mike) Cook and Beth (Michael) White, both of Columbia; grandchildren, Adam (Jillian) Cook, Brian (Traci) Cook, Chris (Jennifer) Cook, all of Columbia; Ashleigh (Mern) Maynord of Spring Hill, Caitlin (Wyatt) Clemmer of Thompson Station, and Nicholas (Tara) White of Chattanooga; great grandchildren: Cameron Webb, Jaelyn Black, Sam Maynord, Chase Maynord, Max Clemmer; several nieces; and several great nieces and great nephews. Pallbearers will include her grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
