Darrell Elmer Connelly, 91, retired employee of Union Carbide and longtime resident of Hampshire Pike, died Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Life Care Center of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wayne B. Hardison and Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will follow in Centerville City Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born October 14, 1923 in Hickman, he was the son of the late Earl C. Connelly and Avvie Hailey Connelly. The 1941 graduate of Hickman County High School served in the U. S. Army from January 1943 - January 1946. He was stationed in the Pacific, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Korea. Mr. Connelly worked as a bricklayer at Union Carbide Plant in Columbia for thirty-three years with his special longtime friend Monroe Lovell. He was a lifetime member of the Brick Layers Union, Local 5. He was a volunteer worker on the "Tuesday Crew" at Columbia Academy. He was an avid golfer, often playing with Boyd Gilliam, Charlie Riddle and the late Tom Sparkman.. Mr. Connelly was a faithful member of Riverside/North View Church of Christ for more than sixty-seven years. He taught Bible classes for the young people for many years and was very active in helping to build the present building for the North View Church of Christ. Survivors include his son, Darrell Timothy "Tim" (Diana) Connelly of Chesapeake, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Pamela Connelly of Columbia; grandchildren, Timothy Jordan "T.J." Connelly, Heather Connelly, Joshua Connelly, Bethany Connelly, Merideth Connelly, and Robert Tobin Connelly, Jr.; niece, Phyllis Bruff; and nephew, Dock O'Neal, Jr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Parris Connelly; son, Robert Tobin Connelly; sister, Marjorie Dean O'Neal; and brother, Bernard Connelly. Active pallbearers will be Hal Holcomb, Ronnie Merideth, Doug Williams, Randell Rummage, Dean Dial, and Joe Roberson. Honorary pallbearers include Charles Riddle, James Deen, Marvin Heskett, Boyd Gilliam, members of the Columbia Academy Tuesday Crew, and Elders and Deacons at North View Church of Christ.
