David Russell Logsdon

David Russell Logsdon, 67, Columbia native and former editor of THE DAILY HERALD, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at St. Thomas Hospital after a short-term illness. The family will visit with friends Friday, July 20, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. A private family graveside service will be at Old Well Cemetery on Saturday. Condolences may be offered online at oakesandnichols.com. Logsdon was a resident of Little Lot, Tennessee, where he lived with his wife, Linda Walters Logsdon. In recent years he began a company, Kettle Mills Press, under which he created a series of books featuring first person accounts of the Civil War. He was a May, 1975 graduate of the University of Alabama and was a high school teacher in both Huntsville, Alabama and Centerville, Tennessee. He served a tour of duty in Viet Nam with the rank of Artillery Sergeant. In addition to editing THE DAILY HERALD, Logsdon held several other positions at the publication between July, 1982 and December, 1986. In February, 1987, he joined the staff of THE NASHVILLE BANNER and worked there until it closed in January, 1994. After a short span, he joined the staff of THE TENNESSEAN where he worked until his May, 2011 retirement. He was the son of the late A. R. Logsdon and Frances Kennedy Logsdon of Columbia, who survives. Other survivors include a step-daughter, Cuffey Walters Stancliff of Santa Fe; brother, DeWitt Logsdon and his wife, Brenda Logsdon; nephews, Jeff Logsdon and Drew Logsdon of Columbia. David was also the nephew of former publisher of THE DAILY HERALD, Sam D. Kennedy and his wife, Betty Finney Kennedy of Columbia and Annie Mai Lain of Chattanooga and has several cousins.Memorials may be made to Old Well Cemetery Fund, c/o Clyde Farris 1204 WKRM Lane Columbia, TN 38401.
