Donald Matthews Scott, 85, well-known Columbia grocerlivestock trader, and farmer in the Sawdust Community, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at St. Thomas Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Graymere Church of Christ with Wendell Robinson and Don Vick officiating. Burial will follow in Wilkes Cemetery in the Culleoka Community. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and after 12:00 noon Saturday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the James C. Born and reared in Maury County, he was the son of the late Allen Burnley Scott and Bessie Belle Matthews Scott and attended Culleoka schools. Mr. Scott owned and operated Riverside Market and Hatcher Lane Market for a number of years. He also was manager of Southern Livestock and a salesman for Herbert Lewis Tractor Company. Associated with farming all his life, he also raised, trained, and showed Tennessee Walking Horses for a number of years. He was also life-long outdoorsman and sportsman, enjoyed all types of hunting and was an avid coon hunter. Mr. Scott was a member of Graymere Church of Christ and a 50-year member of Columbia Masonic Lodge #31. His wife, Jean Trousdale Scott, died October 24, 2003. Survivors include daughters, Donna Kay (Don) Vick of Franklin and Tammy Scott Riley of Columbia; sister, Margaret Scott Butler of Roswell, Georgia; grandchildren, Matthew Paul Vick, Scott Andrew Vick, Stephanie Jean Riley, and William Scott Riley. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Clifford Scott. Active pallbearers are Don Dugger, Matt Vick, Scott Vick, Will Riley, Bill Butler, Neil Sturgill, Chad Sturgill, Stanley Scott, Ron Scott, and Glenn Raymond. Honorary pallbearers include former employees and directors of Southern Livestock.
