View Funeral Webcast Dr Carl Clinton Gardner, Jr., 95, retired Maury County physician and resident of Columbia, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Nashville. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with his nephew, Rev. Alan Weatherly, officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. William G. Fuqua, Dr. Willie Robinson, Dr. Steve Simmons, and retired and current members of the Maury County Medical Society. The family suggests memorials to the Maury Regional Medical Center Foundation. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born August 28, 1916 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Carl C. Gardner, Sr. and Sarah T. Berry Gardner. He attended public schools in Maury County and was Valedictorian of the 1934 Class at Central High School. After attending Vanderbilt University for three years, he was awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University Medical School from which he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in June, 1941. Following graduation, he served an internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts from February, 1942 to February, 1943. Dr. Gardner entered military service March 12, 1943 as a 1st Lieutenant, 3rd Infantry Division of the U. S. Army Medical Corps. He saw action in Africa and Italy and was on the Anzio beachhead during invasion in 1944. In 1945, he was assigned to work with displaced persons in the European Theatre of Operation. At the end of World War II, he was discharged with the rank of Captain and served an additional year at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital as Assistant Resident, followed by three years at Framingham Veterans Hospital. He was certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1951 and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1955. Dr. Gardner began the private practice of medicine in Columbia June 10, 1952 and continued in active practice at Maury County Hospital (now Maury Regional Medical Center) holding many positions, including Chief of Staff until 1984 when he retired from private practice. He remained as a consultant to Maury Regional Medical Center through April, 1996. He was a member of the American College of Physicians; American Society of Internal Medicine; American Medical Association; Tennessee Chapter; American College of Physicians; Tennessee Society of Internal Medicine; Tennessee Medical Association; Maury County Medical Society; and Medical Staff of Maury Regional Medical Center. Dr. Gardner was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church. He was married May 8, 1942 to the former Clarice Frances Peterson of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Their 48-year marriage ended with her death January 13, 1991. Survivors include his children, Dr. Susan E. Gardner, and her husband, Dr. Philip Scott of Houston, Texas, Carol Gardner, R.N.N.P., and her husband, Terry Thomas of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and David S. Gardner, attorney, and his wife, Leslie of Nashville; grandchildren, Ted (Laura Wolfram) Scott, Rebecca (Colin McGrath) Scott, and Christy Thomas; brother, Robert R. (Betty) Gardner; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Sarah Gardner (James) Weatherly, Mary Gardner (Clyde) Orr; and brother, Dr. E. Clinton (Ruth) Gardner.
