DuPont Corporation and former resident of the Knob Creek Community, died Thursday, July 22, 2010 at his residence on Double Branch Road. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. W. D. Thomason and Brother Mike Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Knob Creek Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Saturday after 3:00 P.M. concluding with a Masonic Service at 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to West End Baptist Church, 900 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401; Knob Creek Cemetery, c/o Tim Fitzgerald, 1209 Hunter's Point Road, Spring Hill 37174, or American Legion Post #19 Community Service Fund, 812 Nashville Highway, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. He was born September 15, 1928 in Robbinsville, North Carolina to the late Gordon and Edrie Taylor Ammons. He was the grandson of the late John A. and Laura Ammons and Charlie and Mary Taylor, all of the Knob Creek Community. The young Ammons family returned to the Knob Creek Community from North Carolina when Edd was 2 years old. He was a graduate of Central High School and enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving during the Korean War for 4 years. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his participation with Boat Unit #1 in the amphibious landing during the Inchon Invasion. Following discharge from the Navy, he returned to Columbia to work in the furniture business with his uncle, the late Charles Taylor. He later was employed by E. I. DuPont Corporation until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed raising black angus cattle, fishing, hunting, and boating. Mr. Ammons was a charter member of West End Baptist Church, member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 for 58 years, was a Scottish Rite Mason for 50 years, and member of the "Fruit of the Vine." Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Anne Hayes of Columbia; daughters, Jennifer (Tony) Grimes and Linda (Mike) Shouse of Columbia; brother, Bill (Molly) Ammons of Columbia; granddaughters, Ansley (Dr. John) Stanfill of Memphis and Addison Elizabeth Shouse of Columbia; and a niece, Marnie (Ted) Johnson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Lynn Ammons. Active pallbearers are Dr. John Stanfill, Brad Hayes, Jack Hayes, Donny Walters, David Taylor, Harold Meador, Bob Ammons, David Ammons, and Oliver Ammons. Honorary pallbearers include Don Taylor, Ted Johnson, Dwight Jewell, Jeff Klein, John McEntyre, Neal Wall, Larry Shaw, Gene Aydelotte, Clifton Sparkman, J. B. Long, John Christopher, retirees of E. I. DuPont Corporation, members of West End Baptist Church, and his fishing buddies.
