Edith Hammond Allen

Edith Alice Hammond Allen, 85, homemaker and resident of Westwood Drive, died Friday, November 9, 2012 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Graymere Church of Christ, 1320 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia 38401 or Columbia Academy, 1171 Columbia Academy Circle, Columbia 38401. Notes of condolence may be extended at oakesandnichols.com. Born in Lawrence County, she was one of thirteen children of the late Luther Van Hammond and Mary Susan Shelton Hammond. Mrs. Allen loved the Lord and her family, was a long-time, faithful member of Graymere Church of Christ and active in the work of the church for many years. She married Buford Nelson Allen, well-known Columbia businessman, July 17, 1945. Their 63-year marriage ended with his death November 7, 2008. Survivors include her sons, Gary (Joyce) Allen and Duane (Kay) Allen of Columbia; grandchildren, Rachael (Drake) Stanfill of Franklin, Heather (Allen) Tetleton of Germantown, Lori (Steven) Nixon of Columbia, and Jared "Bubba" (Kristin) Allen of Franklin; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Viola Butler of Leoma and Marie Voss of Columbia; and brother, Duel Hammond of Priceville, Alabama. Active pallbearers are Jared "Bubba" Allen, Steven Nixon, Drake Stanfill, Allen Tetleton, David Allen, and Randy Allen. Members of the Roger Riddle Sunday School Class at Graymere Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
