Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. She was born February 24, 1909 in Maury County, the daughter of the late John Marshall Hunter and Dovie Bell Hunter Hunter. She was a 1929 graduate of Columbia Central High School. She was married September 2, 1933 to Malcolm "Mac" Underwood. Their 54-year marriage ended with his death November 30, 1987. Mrs. Underwood lived over 100 years in the Bear Creek Community surrounded by life-long friends and family. For a number of years she worked with her husband at Minor's Grocery No. 2. The Berea Church of Christ was her home congregation for her entire life. For the last six years, her only child, Bettye Belle Brown, lovingly cared for her in her home across from the farm Mrs. Underwood lived on for 84 years. She lived all her life only two miles from the old home place where she and nine brothers were born and reared. Elizabeth, or "Sis," was the only sister to nine brothers, all deceased: Ed, Harlan, Bob, Norris, Willis, Hayes, Allie, Web, and Grady Hunter. She was also preceded in death by her special son-in-law, Norman Brown. Mrs. Underwood was known for her hand-work and the beautiful quilts she pieced throughout her life have been handed down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are also left with fond memories of her milking cows, raising the large gardens of vegetables and flowers she loved, and being spoiled by their "Nanaw." Her grandchildren are Belinda (Hal) Holcomb, Michael Brown, Bobby (Sharon) Brown, and Beverly (Dr. Michael) Richardson. She is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers are David Inch, Jermy Cothran, and great-grandsons, Chris Brown, Colton Brown, Noah Richardson, Spencer Richardson. Special appreciation is expressed to friend Rhonda Lunn for her special care and love. A special thank you for the thoughtfulness and care given during her last few weeks at Life Care of Columbia.
