View Funeral Webcast Elizabeth Joyce Woody, 96, former long-time resident of the Santa Fe Community, died Friday, April 1, 2011 at Life Care of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Sherry Ladd and Rev. Calvin Lunn officiating. Burial will follow in Santa Fe Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Santa Fe Cemetery, c/o Norman Harris, 3929 Sowell Hollow Road, Columbia 38401 or Maury County Public Library, 211 West 8th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born and reared in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late Grover Joyce and Margaret Smith Joyce. On October 5, 1940 she married Samuel Jefferson Woody of the Santa Fe Community. Their 36 year marriage ended with his death August 4, 1976. She was a graduate of Bell Buckle High School and earned a B.S. Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Later, she completed course work in Library Science at George Peabody College. Her teaching career at Santa Fe School spanned twenty-odd years. Mrs. Woody was a long-time, faithful member of Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Woody of Columbia; sons, William Wayne (Ann Rose) Woody of Hayesville, North Carolina and Fred Newton Woody of Atlanta; sisters, Mary J. Carr of Shelbyville, Martha J. Hastings of Orlando, Florida, and Milbrey Holly of Franklin; grandsons, William Jefferson (Denise) Woody of Atlanta, Georgia and Jason Warner Woody of Brentwood; great-grandchildren, Emily Frances Woody and Elizabeth Claire Woody, both of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret J. Green and Dorothy Nan Joyce; brothers, Grover Joyce, Billy Joyce, and Charles Joyce; and a daughter-in-law, Becky Terry Woody. Her Joyce and Woody nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Juanita and Will Frank Woody, Audrey and James Taylor, and Faye Hartsfield.
