View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Ellen Caroline McMeen West, 85, long-time resident of Carter's Creek Pike, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Terry Peery officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Henry Hadley McMeen and Lettie Fields McMeen. She was a graduate of Columbia Central High School and Columbia Business College. Like many other young women, at the outbreak of World War II she went to work on the homefront in the fashion of "Rosie the Rivetor," building airplanes for the war effort. Later, for a number of years, she was a seamstress for Parks-Belk Company. Mrs. West was a member and active in the affairs of West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many years. She was a former member of the Maury County Farm Bureau Women and for several years served as a leader in 4-H Clubs of America. She was married December 24, 1952 to Ive L. "I.L." West, Jr. Their 57-year marriage ended with his death June 15, 2009. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Barrier of Columbia; sons, Jeffery West of Columbia and John (Carol) West of Centerville; sister, Martha Lorraine Whitten of Lawrenceburg; grandchildren, Christian Hayes of Lawrenceburg and Ben West of Centerville; sisters-in-law, Pat West of Columbia, Sarah Carrigan of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Betty Jean Blocker of Jensen, Florida, and Elizabeth West of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Mahlon McMeen, Marvin McMeen, Melvin McMeen, Monroe McMeen, Frank McMeen, and A. J. McMeen. Active pallbearers are Andy McMeen, Andy Whitten, David McMeen, J. B. West, Jr., David West, Tony West, Joe West, Ronald Blocker, Horace Higginbotham, Charles Higginbotham, Ray Higginbotham, Roger Pilkinton, and Doug Williams. Members of West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
