View Funeral Webcast Elvy Lee "Tom" Haney, 83, retired from Columbia Power & Water System, died Friday, January 14, 2011 at his residence on Old U.S. Highway 31, South. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Melvin Collins and Rev. David McGregor officiating. Burial will follow in Allen Cemetery in the Caney Springs Community with military honors at graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion. The family will visit with friends Sunday after 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Old Hickory, he was the son of the late Jimmy Hudson Haney and Marzee Sudberry Haney. He was a 1945 graduate of Forrest High School in Chapel Hill and lettered in football and baseball. Immediately after graduation in June 1945, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. During World War II he served in the South Pacific on the USS Yakutat, USS General Black, and USS General Randall. While serving off Samar Island on land duty, he was assigned duty in the Post Office and later on Mare Island worked decommissioning submarines. After the war, he remained in the inactive reserves until 1969. Mr. Haney worked with the Columbia Power & Water System for 34 years and at his retirement was Manager of the Meter Department. His avid interest in sports continued from childhood throughout his life as a youth baseball and football coach for 35 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Old Hickory. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Edith Dillehay Haney of Columbia; daughters, Michelle (Chuck) Adams of Lynnville and Linda (Jerry) Marcum of Franklin; sons, Robert Lee (Brenda) Haney of Des Moines, Iowa and Michael (Samantha) Haney of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers, Jim Haney and Virgil Haney, both of Columbia; grandchildren, Alison Jerden, Lacy Voyles, Amy Jones, Shantel Fleeman, Ashley Ring, Travis Haney, Chuck Adams IV, Peyton Adams, Hudson Adams, Emma Goodhaney, and Sophia Goodhaney; great-grandchildren, Lilly Fleeman, Landon Fleeman (deceased), Avery Jones, Levi Fleeman, Ryder Voyles, Sienna Jerden, and Stella Voyles. Active pallbearers are Ricky Lemay, Don Walters, Wayne Hickman, Jerry Sudberry, Loy Sudberry, Jimmy Pilkinton, Stevie Wilson, Steve Boshears, Wayne Ladd, and James Paul Gary. Honorary pallbearers include Jim Clower, Talmas Gray, Frank Williams, Hank Whitehead, Jim Boshears, Kelly Lunn, and all ball players he coached over the years.
