Emmalyn Sands Carden

October 26, 1922 — November 13, 2013

Mrs. Emmalyn Sands Carden, 91, retired employee of Monsanto and former longtime resident of Shawnee Drive in Idlewild, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 P.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. The family will visit with friends at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home Sunday from 1:00 P.M. until time of service. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born October 27, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Earl Sands and Bess Wiley Sands Brunson. Her father died in a farm accident when she was an infant; and her stepfather, Wiley Brunson, also preceded her in death. She was born in Giles County near the Lynnville Community and moved to Maury County at an early age. She was married to Ernest Lamont Carden who preceded her in death on October 7, 1986. Mrs. Carden attended Mynders Elementary School and was a graduate of Columbia Central High School and Columbia Business College. She began her career with Monsanto in 1942 and prior to her retirement in 1982, she was Receptionist/Secretary. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Columbia. Her memberships include The Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities (APTA), The James K. Polk Memorial Association, and The Maury County Arts Guild. Mrs. Carden is survived by treasured and beloved friends, Melba Vest, Sonny & Sharon Thomas, and Bobbie Baggett. Her family includes cousins Bobby & Beth Sands of Columbia; David Sands; Rob & Kathryn Sands and Chase Elizabeth Sands; and Lee Alexander Sands; and other cousins, Raymond Wright Hickman, Paul R. (Marguerite) Sands, and Lawrence D. (Sandy) Sands, all of Lynnville; Samuel Sands of Florida; Jean Sands Clark and William A. (Betty) Dugger, both of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Priscilla Carden Visintine of St. Louis, Missouri; Melissa Carden Bean of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Jim Carden, Jr. of Seattle, Washington; Phillip Cave of Atlanta, Georgia; John Cave of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Laura Lee Cave Morgan of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Pallbearers will be Rob Sands, David Sands, Lee Sands, Thomas Hales, W. O. "Sonny" Thomas, and Lawrence D. Sands.
