View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast Estelle Sneed Witherspoon, 94, well-known Columbia saleslady and long-time resident of Trotwood Avenue, died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late John L. Sneed and Lola Lovell Sneed and attended Columbia Central High School. She was married September 20, 1936 to Kenneth F. "Toots" Witherspoon, long-time Maury County Sheriff, who died November 29, 1994. As a young lady, she was a saleslady at Garber's Ladies Shop and worked at Washington Manufacturing Company. Later, she was employed by J. C. Penny Company until her retirement with 42 years service. Mrs. Witherspoon was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 287 and held numerous other offices in over 50 years of membership. She was also a member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church and active in the American Legion Auxiliary for a number of years. Survivors include a sister, Christine Barlar of Columbia; brothers, Bobby (Joy) Sneed of Nashville and Donald (Dottie) Sneed of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Irene Sneed, Nancy Thompson; nieces and nephews including, Nancy Bell, Dorothy Campbell, Kay Hahn, Mallory Hubbell, Patty Smith, Nancy Smith, Mary Lynn Pipkin, Rosemarie Smalley, Jan Binkley, Todd Sneed, Jeff Sneed, Jim Smith, Jerry Sweeney, Mike Sweeney, John William Sweeney, David Sneed, Hank Smith, Ronnie Sneed, Larry Sneed, and Jackie Sneed; several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Sweeney and brothers, John Odell "Toby" Sneed and Morris L. Sneed. Pallbearers are Judge Bobby Sands, Todd Sneed, Jim Smith, Jeff Sneed, Jerry Sweeney, Mike Sweeney, Ronnie Sneed, Larry Sneed, Jackie Sneed, John William Sweeney, David Sneed, and Hank Smith.
