View Video Tribute Evelyn Bryant Warren, 101, retired school teacher and former resident of Cayce Lane died Friday, July 4, 2014 at NHC Healthcare of Pulaski. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Chip Hunter, Rev. Tom Smith and Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Tracy City, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Bryant and Mamie Ponder Bryant. Her father died in the 1918 flu epidemic when she was not quite five years old and her mother raised the four children (three boys and one girl) by herself. Evelyn was a 1932 graduate of Grundy County High School in Tracy City, attended Martin Methodist College for two years and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1940. She earned her master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. Her thirty-five year teaching career included positions at James K. Shook School in Tracy City, Lester Chapel School near Jackson and Earl F. Carr School in Lincoln Park, Michigan. In her earlier life she traveled extensively, was well known for the vegetables that she grew in her garden, and enjoyed working cross-word puzzles. She was a longtime member of the water aerobics class at Maury County YMCA, exercising and swimming three days a week, as long as she was able. Along with her many other activities she was an active member of the Thomas McKissick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class. On June 1, 2013, her church family invited friends and neighbors to come and help her celebrate her 100th birthday. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Joanne Bryant of Pulaski; two nephews, Jerry (Joyce) Bryant and Bob (Patsy) Bryant, both of Pulaski; great nieces, Amy Bryant, Jennifer Mendez, Mary Ramsey Phillips, and Grayson Pursch. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Bryant, Ponder Bryant, and Willis Bryant.
