View Funeral WebcastFulton Rankin, 84, retired physical lab tester at Union Carbide Corporation, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at his residence on Bailey Street. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Angy Trimmer officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Craft Memorial United Methodist Church, 907 Hatcher Lane, Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be extended at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of the Neapolis Community in Maury County, he was the son of the late Shorter Rankin and Katie Bell Eakin Rankin. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II as a Military Policeman at an American Prison Camp in Germany. Mr. Rankin was a member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood-working, and go-cart racing. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Johns Rankin, whom he married June 1, 1951; son, Barry Rankin of Columbia; grandson, Steven Rankin of Columbia; brother, Charles (Shirley) Rankin of Columbia; sister-in-law, Polly Rankin of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alvia Lovett and brothers, T. H. Rankin and Tom Rankin. Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Union Carbide Corporation retirees and Columbia Mall walkers. The family expresses special appreciation to his caregivers, Maggie, Jamie, and Catlin for their kindness and care during his illness.
