View Funeral WebcastGeorge Luther Farris, 90, long-time farmer and resident of Booker Farm Road, died Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Life Care of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Barry Farris officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Sewell Walker Farris and Mattie Louise Edwards Farris and long-time member of Cedar Hill Church of Christ. At the outset of World War II, he joined the U. S. Army January 21, 1941 and was assigned Squad Leader for the 30th Infantry Division, 117th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company 1. With the rank of Staff Sergeant, he landed at Omaha Beach and continued with his Regiment into battles through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, EAME Theatre Medal, 3 Bronze Battle Stars, and Sharp-Shooter Badge. He was discharged August 13, 1945. Mr. Farris was a life-member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. He farmed for many years and also worked for Haury & Smith Contractors from 1973 until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dana Chapman Farris; children, Georgene (Jere) Brinkley of St. Joe Beach, Florida, Marlin (Michael) McGrew of Franklin, Lynn (Bobby) Andrews of Columbia, and Phil (Brenda) Farris of Hampshire; grandchildren, Tamara (Lex) Price, Michelle (Matt) Jenkins, Matthew Wade, Nick (Melissa) Andrews, Rebecca Andrews, Perry Farris, Andrew Lemay and Hunter Lemay; great-grandchildren, Danielle Mercer, Landry Jenkins, Luke Jenkins, Macy Andrews, and Walker Andrews; niece, Donna Akin (Harvey) Ring; nephews, Travis (Edie) Akin, Terry Farris, and Dennis Farris; sisters-in-law, Gloria (David) Chapman and Myrtle (Rebon) Chapman. He was preceded in death by a sister, Willa Mae Akin and a brother, Porter Farris. Family will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Love Town & Cross Bridges Communities, Dr. William Robinson, Dr. Gibran Naddy, Dr. James Marshall, Dr. Srikar Reddy, and Dr. Dwayne Fulks
