View Video TributeMrs. George Ann Stanfill Thurman, 83, retired employee of Walls Grocery, died Saturday, August 24, 2013 at her residence on West Avenue. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of the Kettle Mills Community, she was the daughter of the late Willie Augustus Stanfill and Callie Olivia Smith Stanfill. In 1948 she married James Luther Thurman, Sr. who preceded her in death on July 5, 1975. In her earlier life, Mrs. Thurman was employed by Tennessee Knitting Mills and retired from Walls Grocery after several years of employment. A very devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed attending sporting events of her family members and was very giving of her time. She also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. She was an honorary member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 Ladies' Auxiliary and a former Ladies' Elk. She was a member of Highland Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Pam (Mike) Dawson of Columbia; sons, James "Jim" (Sherry) Thurman, Jr. of Trenton, Michigan; Larry (Gail) Thurman and William "Moto" (Jean) Thurman, both of Columbia; sister, Brownie Cheatham of Columbia; brother, Jack (Betty) Stanfill of Mt. Juliet; grandchildren, Lee Ann (Irvin) Reed, Renee (Preston) Stanton, James "Jamie" (Jennifer) Thurman, III, Nathan (Brandi) Thurman, Ryan (Jennifer) Thurman, Bridgett Johnson, Emily (Girard) Graham, Tiffany Dawson, and Brittany Dawson; sixteen great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jean Hood, Pat Stanfill, and Sarah Stanfill; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including Charlene Brady and Mavis Pitts, both of Columbia. She was preceded in death by sisters, Nora B. Lindsey, Clara Walls, and Tommie Stanfill; and brothers, J. D. Stanfill and Whitey Stanfill. Active pallbearers will be Nathan Thurman, Ryan Thurman, Jamie Thurman, Ray Stanfill, Randy Stanfill, Chad Stanfill, Todd Stanfill, Barry DeVault, and Royce Thurman. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 Ladies' Auxiliary.
