Geraldine Alexander Huckaby

View Funeral Wbcast Geraldine Alexander Huckaby, 90, resident of Signature Health Care and supervising teacher and recreation director for mentally handicapped children, died Monday, March 14, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Bud Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Clayton, New Mexico she was the daughter of the late Elmer Alexander and Opal Chilcote Alexander. She was reared in Ethridge, Tennessee and was a 1940 graduate of Summertown High School. She received a B.S. degree in Special Education from UT in Knoxville and her Masters degree from George Peabody College in Nashville. She was certified to teach hearing impaired as well as multiple handicapped children. She was supervising teacher at T.C. Thompson's Children's Hospital in Chattanooga from 1944 through 1955. She taught primary classes for handicapped children in Jacksonville, Florida and helped open classes for handicapped children in King's Daughters' School in Columbia. She also taught at South Park School and Gregg School in Memphis and Orange Grove School in Chattanooga. Because of her skills and efforts she has been in Who's Who in America, and featured in Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping Magazine. She is survived by her son, Bart Huckaby of Chattanooga; daughter Sandra Huckaby of Columbia; three granddaughters, Summer Huckaby of Tampa, Florida, Amber Ann Huckaby and Brittany Huckaby both of Chattanooga; one great granddaughter Heaven Lee Huckaby of Tampa, Florida; one brother, Carl (Betty) Alexander of Lawrenceburg; two sisters-in-law LaVera Alexander of Big Springs, Texas, Betty Alexander of Ethridge; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Clifton Allen Huckaby, a sister, G.G. Alexander, three brothers, Mac Wayne Alexander, Walter Alexander, Ben Alexander, and sister-in-law Mattie Lou Alexander. Family and friends will serve as Pallbearers.
