Harold Wright Peay, 81, retired inspector at Union Carbide Corporation for 35 years, died Friday, September 23, 2011 at The Gardens of Poplar Estates. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Richard VanCleave and Rev. Dwain Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Rock Springs Cemetery with military honors at graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He was a 1948 graduate of Columbia Central High School. During the Korean War, he served in the U. S. Army stationed in Japan. Mr. Peay farmed all his life and loved raising cattle and working with tractors on his farm in the Bear Creek Community. He was a life-long member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and served as Treasurer for 35 years. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa (Tom) Gordon of Centerville; son, Terry Peay of Columbia; devoted friend, Doris Murphy of Spring Hill and her children, Tony Murphy and Darla (Geoff) Goodman and her 9 grandchildren; and Janet Peay; 6 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers are J. W. Campbell, Dwight Groves, Geoff Goodman, Tony Murphy, Farris Lovett, and Tracy Chappell. Honorary pallbearers include Mark Dye, Eddie Burns, Hubert Hie, Mike Brown, Union Carbide Corporation retirees, and members of Rock Springs Baptist Church. The family offers special thanks to the residents and staff of The Gardens whom he considered part of his family.
