Harold Douglas "H. D." Short, 83, retired supervisor of the Test Center for Bell South Telephone and resident of McIntire Drive, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at NHC Columbia. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Billy Kimbrough officiating. Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 will provided military honors at graveside. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols. The family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church, 2790 Pulaski Highway, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Lex Short and Josephine Thomas Short. He was a graduate of Hume-Fogg High School in Nashville, served in the U. S. Navy, and was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Mr. Short was a faithful member of First Baptist Church where served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and formerly the Columbia Wagon Wheelers. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Eugenia Hindman Short, whom he married October 26, 1944; son, Doug Short of Kingston Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Active pallbearers are Frank Thomas, Tommy Hemphill, Kenny Sidwell, Lex Murray, Corky Murray, Steve Odom, and Cody Odom. Honorary pallbearers include First Baptist Church ushers, Telephone Pioneers, and Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 members.
