View Funeral Webcast Mrs. Helen Anne “Nisty” Turman Day, 92, resident of Academy Lane, died Sunday, January 9, 2022 at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs. Day will be conducted Friday, January 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Chris Bowhay and The Reverend Thomas Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Churchyard. The family will visit with friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service in The Parish Hall at the church. Born August 26, 1929 in Hernando, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late William Frank Turman and the late Helen Allison Turman. When in first grade, she met her future husband, with whom she instantly bonded. Though they traveled different pathways during their lifetime, their lives always seemed to intertwine. She graduated high school in Hernando, Mississippi and went on to attend Mississippi State College for Women and received a Bachelor of Science. Mrs. Day taught school in Greenville, Mississippi for a few years and then went to Jackson, Mississippi where she was a secretary for an oil company. After she returned back home to Horn Lake, Mississippi, Helen reconnected with her true love once again and married Louis Arwood Day, Sr. on February 10, 1955. Mrs. Day and her husband were former owners of Piggly Wiggly in Columbia, where she worked as a bookkeeper, and front line and deli supervisor. She enjoyed quilt making, needle pointing, playing Sudoku, and traveling to her mountain home in Franklin, North Carolina along with her husband. She was a former member of the Columbia Garden Club and a local book club. She adored her children and grandchildren and was very involved in their activities when they were growing up. Mrs. Day was a very devoted caregiver to her husband when his health declined until his passing on October 24, 2018. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, served on the Alter Guild from 1974-2019, and a former Sunday School teacher and volunteered for many church activities including, The People’s Table. Survivors include her son, Louis Arwood “Buddy” Day, Jr. of Columbia; daughters, Allison Day (Thomas) Mainolfi of Asheville, North Carolina and Lou Anne Day Pritchard of Memphis, Tennessee; grandchildren, Ashley Day (Allen) Roberts of Whitehouse, Tennessee, Anna Day (Zack Tripp) Mainolfi of Baltimore, Maryland, Helen Anne Mainolfi of Franklin, North Carolina, Andrew Thomas ‘Drew” Mainolfi of Sewanee, Tennessee, Mary Allison Pritchard of Brooklyn, New York, and Anne Katherine “KT” Pritchard of Franklin, North Carolina; sister, Margaret Lyons of Seagrove Beach, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Deborah Kay French Day; brothers, William Frank Turman, Jr., Ray Turman, and Dr. Prentice Allison Turman. Pallbearers will be Louis Arwood “Buddy” Day, Jr., Thomas Mainolfi, Allen Roberts, Drew Mainolfi, Zack Tripp, Dr. Bob Thompson and Jim Milliken.
