Herman Lee Rhodes, 88, long-time resident of the Cross Bridges Community, died Friday, April 22, 2011 at Hidden Acres Manor. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Joe Rhodes officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at Oakes & Nichols. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Florence, Alabama, he was the son of the late Harvey Rhodes and Willie Hall Rhodes. When a young child, his mother died and his aunt and uncle, the late Ethel Hall and William Rhodes, took him into their home and reared him as their own. Mr. Rhodes worked for 35 years as a crane operator for Hooker Chemical Company and later Occidental Chemical Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Christ. In 1945 he married the former Earline Goad who preceded him in death May 4, 1997. Survivors include his sons, Bobby Joe (Gilda) Rhodes of Columbia, Dr. Fred W. (Gale) Rhodes of Louisville, Kentucky, and Nelson Lee (Linda) Rhodes of Columbia; grandchildren, Andrea Rhodes of Columbia, Joe Rhodes of New Johnsonville, Robert Spencer "Bo" Rhodes of Memphis, Kevin Rhodes of Unionville, Zack Rhodes of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Abigale Rhodes of Lexington, Kentucky; nine great-grandchildren.
