Howard Cecil Whiteside

Howard Cecil Whiteside, 104, lifelong resident of Hampshire, died Wednesday, June 10 at home.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 13 at 1:00 at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Harold Delk and Bill McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Worley Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Visitation will be on Friday, June 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.

Cecil was born on March 17, 1922, to the late Ben Oscar Whiteside and the late Annie Pogue Whiteside in Maury County. He attended Stephens School in Isom for his first nine years and finished his education at Hampshire High School where he graduated in 1940. He worked at Oscar Hardison’s Grocery Store in Columbia until he volunteered for the Navy in 1942. He served for the duration of World War II as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class in the Navy Armed Guard. He did tours of duty that took him from many parts of the Western Pacific to France. He returned home and began farming with his father and continued actively farming until his 93rd year. He also worked in trucking and later began to work in carpentry. He became a master craftsman in wood, building furniture and many other things, most of which he gave to family and friends. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He hosted dove hunts for over 60 years. He played baseball after the war, coached youth baseball, and played softball until his mid 60’s. He loved to attend Mule Days and only missed one parade since they started in 1934. He was sought after for his knowledge of local history, making many presentations in his later years. He was a lifelong member of Cathey’s Creek Church of Christ where he served as a song leader for almost 20 years and an elder for over 40 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Letha Lou Masterson Whiteside, who he married on April 4, 1954; son, Glenn (Rosemary) Whiteside of Trussville, AL; daughter, Dottie (Sammy) Boshers of Columbia, TN; and son, Jeff (Vickie) Whiteside of Hampshire, TN; seven grandchildren, Kate (Jonathan) Clark, Sarah Whiteside, Martin (Audrey) Daniel, Clint (Emily) Daniel, Zach (Kayla) Whiteside, Colton (Zoe) Whiteside, and Zeke Whiteside; five great grandchildren, Noah Clark, Sarah Kate Clark, Sutton Daniel, Sawyer Daniel and Gemma Daniel; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters; Hortense Delk, Kathleen Morton, Edith Delk, Vera Ann Grimes; and one brother, Paul Neely Whiteside.

The pallbearers will be Martin Daniel, Clint Daniel, Sutton Daniel, Sawyer Daniel, Zach Whiteside, Colton Whiteside, Zeke Whiteside, Paul Whiteside and Luke Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders & Deacons of Cathey’s Creek Church of Christ.
