View Video Tributes Imogene Jackson Carson, 84, former long-time resident of Bigby Drive, died Friday, October 5, 2012 at her current residence on Water Valley Road in the Santa Fe Community. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Bob Vassar officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. Born in Lebanon in Wilson County, she was the daughter of the late John D. Jackson and Beulah Newsome Jackson and attended schools in Lebanon, Murfreesboro, and Draughn's Business College in Nashville. For several years she worked in the office of Ragland & Potter in Nashville and later Dixie Manufacturing Company in Columbia. She was also a dental assistant to Drs. Harris and Patton in Murfreesboro. A long-time, faithful member of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church, Mrs. Carson participated in many activities of the congregation. She especially enjoyed "Young at Heart" and trips with other church groups and their outings. She was very active as a supporter and advocate of Rights for the Disabled due to the disabilities of two of her daughters who were stricken with muscular dystrophy in early childhood. She vigorously participated in numerous events and rallies for organizations instrumental in furthering handicap awareness. Her passion for this cause served as the inspiration for her other daughter to pursue a career in nursing. Mrs. Carson had a love for art, design, and flowers. Her creativity and sense of humor will long be remembered, as well as her valiant fight against breast cancer. Survivors include her daughter, Janette Smith (Tommy) Mayberry of Santa Fe; granddaughters, Cara Danae Smith and Abby Lauren Smith; step-granddaughters, Katie Esparza and Carrie Mayberry; great-grandsons, Jalen Matthew Hunt and Isaac Drake Olguin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Morris Carson in 1996; daughters, Wynelle A. Carson, Jewell L. Carson; and a sister, Agnes Wright. Active pallbearers are Charles K. Brown, Randy Stanfill, Baker Woodroof, Steve Grimes, Johnny Smith, and Allen Hampton. Honorary pallbearers include Wilma and Louis Eubank, Bobby Chance, Dr. Douglas Kennedy, and members of Young at Heart at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. Mrs. Carson's family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staffs of Hospice Compassus, including Brandy, Paula, Rita, Eddie, and Jackie; and Comfort Keepers, especially Carrie, Hayni, Deb, Jessica, and Kim for their kindness, care, and concern during her illness.
