J. L. "CHICKEN" SMITH J. L. "Chicken" Smith, 66, well-known Columbia businessman, died Saturday, January 26, 2003 at his residence on Cannan Road. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Jones and Rev. Harold White officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and Tuesday after 12:00 Noon at the church. Memorials may be made to Zion Christian Academy or Riverview Baptist Church. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native grew up in Mt. Pleasant, was the son of the late Sam Hughes Smith and Louise Holt Smith and a graduate of Hay Long High School. Mr. Smith was founder and owner of Smith Trucking & Excavating Company and a partner in Smith & Attkisson Trucking Company and Petty Industrial Equipment & Supplies. He was an organizer and charter Board Member of Community First Bank & Trust Company of Columbia. He was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church, Fraternal Order of Police and Columbia Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Owens Smith of Columbia; two sons, Dr. Tony (Luranne) Smith and Tim (Tomi) Smith of Columbia; five sisters, Dorothy Hines, Catherine (Frank) McBride of Columbia, Carolyn Sisk of Mt. Pleasant, Martha (Randy) Jackson, Shirley Smith of Cross Bridges; two brothers, Billy (Pat) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Wayne Smith of McMinnville; grandchildren, Hugh Smith, Morgan Smith, Annie Smith, Judson Smith, Chad Smith, Amanda Smith and Katie Smith of Columbia; nieces, Debbie Vinson, Amy Hinson, Gina Young, Sonya Allen, Diane Hutcherson, Pam Dawson, Debra Chessor, Charlie Pardue, Linda Hay, Tara Owens, Andrea Owens; nephews, Mark Hines, Jeff Sisk, Brian Jackson, Scott Jackson, Eddie Harvey. Active pallbearers are Jerry Attkisson, Wade Luckett, Frank McBride, Randy Jackson, Mark Hines, Jeff Sisk, Scott Jackson, Brian Jackson, Charles Hay.
