James Edwards "Jimmy" Butler, 88, retired farmer, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at his residence in the Carter's Creek Community. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Keith Sherwood officiating. Burial will follow in Neapolis Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Neapolis United Methodist Church, P. O. Born in Maury County, he was the son of the late Walter Neil Butler, Jr. and Mattie Louise Edwards Butler. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a long-time member of Neapolis United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Watkins Butler, whom he married September 15, 1950; son, David (Kari) Butler of New Lebanon, Ohio; sister, Martha Butler (James) Lee of Spring Hill; brothers, Joe B. (Emily) Butler and Jack (Wanda) Butler, both of Columbia; grandsons, Parker Butler and Spencer Butler; nieces, Brenda (Cary) Blue, Linda (Bill) McMillin, Janet Butler (Phil) Sutherland, and Mike (Sonya) Butler. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Betty Ann and Maurice Glenn "Bud" Hurt; and nephew, Reed Butler. Active pallbearers include Mike Butler, Kenneth Smith, Sam Smith, Edgar Chumley, Glen Redman, and Frank Watkins. The congregation of Neapolis United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family wishes to express appreciation for the devotion of his caregivers during his illness.
