James Nolen Carpenter, 82, retired from CSX Railroad and resident of Depot Street in Spring Hill, died Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Andrew Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Columbia Academy, 1101 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 38401. The Maury County native was the son of the late James Luther Carpenter and Virginia Derryberry Carpenter. He attended Columbia Central High School and served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps from 1953 to 1955. He was a conductor for CSX Railroad until his retirement in 1997. Mr. Carpenter was a long-time member of Jackson Heights Church of Christ. He loved working in his yard and spending time at the beach He married the former Dorothy Hemphill on July 1, 1965. Their 40 year marriage ended with her death May 5, 2006. Survivors include his daughter, Gina (Scott) Turner of Columbia; granddaughter, "whom he loved more than anything," Malli Shea Turner of Columbia; sister, Janice Fetner of Nashville; brother, Ralph (Mildred) Gilliam of Murfreesboro; nieces, Susan (Paul) Smith of Hilton Head, South Carolina and Gwen Martindale of Nashville. Active pallbearers are Scott Turner, Barry Wood, Richard Pilkinton, David Foster, Jamie Hubble, Kenny Young, Tim Garrison, and Mayor Charlie Norman. Honorary pallbearers include Elders and Deacons of Jackson Heights Church of Christ, CSX Retirees, and Waffle House Breakfast Buddies.
