James Edward “Jimmy” Duncan, 82, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home, with Larry Tarkington officiating, and with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Jimmy was born on January 21, 1944, in Culleoka to the late Mahlon Edward Duncan and the late Suzie Helon Norman Duncan. He was a 1962 graduate of Columbia Central High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army, spending thirteen months on the DMZ in Korea.

He retired from Columbia Power and Water Systems after 30 years of dedicated service, where he served as Head of Technical Services. Jimmy was a faithful member of Pleasant Mount Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Past Master of Columbia Lodge No. 31, Free and Accepted Masons. He was also an active member of Herbert Griffin Post 19 of the American Legion.

On October 26, 1963, he married the love of his life, Gayle Uzzell Duncan, and together they shared 62½ years of marriage.

Jimmy enjoyed muscle cars, fishing, camping, and helping friends work on old cars. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Duncan; daughters, Stephanie (Michael) Mayberry and Jennifer Duncan; grandsons, Blake (Lex) Mayberry of Charlotte, Tennessee, Tyler (Hannah) Mayberry, and Jacob Mayberry; granddaughter, Amber Mayberry; and nephews, Stacey (Beth) Anderson and Bart (Renee) Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marthene Duncan Anderson Leese.

Pallbearers will be Blake Thomas Mayberry, Tyler Mayberry, Jacob Mayberry, Stacey Anderson, Bart Anderson, and Michael Mayberry.
