James Louis Springer, Sr., 95, retired production control supervisor for Union Carbide Corporation and resident of Columbia, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. David Spencer and Rev. Jim Norton officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 12:00 Noon to service time. Born in Florence, Alabama, he was the son of the late James Byron Springer and Charlotte Cannady Springer. He married the former Lucille Hobbs on June 14, 1941. Their 70 year marriage ended with her death May 28, 2012. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army and a participant in the D-Day Invasion. He came ashore on Omaha Beach, was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star for Gallantry, and the French Legion d'Honneur. Mr. Springer worked for Union Carbide Corporation from 1941 to 1983, serving positions in Columbia, Cleveland, Ohio, New York, New York, and Danbury, Connecticut. After retirement in 1983, Mr. Springer and his late wife returned to Columbia and became active in the Riverside United Methodist Church where they had been members years before when living in Columbia. Survivors include his daughter, Lucy Jane Murchison of Soddy Daisy; son, James Louis (Jane) Springer, Jr. of Columbia; grandchildren, Tanya Springer of Irmo, South Carolina, Holly (David) Kulp of Germantown, Karen (Bob) Morris of Memphis, and Jeff (Vicki) Murchison of Soddy Daisy; seven great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Aaron W. Springer and Thomas E. "Tommy" Springer; and son-in-law, Howard Patrick "Pat" Murchison. Pallbearers include Jeff Murchison, Bob Morris, David Kulp, J. W. Kulp, John Case, and Mark Hall. The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Gaylon Harris, caregiver, Carol Anderson, and the staffs of NHC Hillview and NHC Home Health Care for the kindness and care during his illness.
