Janice Gilley

August 6, 1955 — August 26, 2023

Janice Gilley, of Atlanta Georgia, passed away on August 26th, 2023. She was at home, and her cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack. She was 68 years old. Janice was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 6th, 1955. Her parents were Joe and Martha Gilley. She grew up in Columbia Tennessee, graduating from Central High School as well as from Columbia State Community College. She was named in the Who’s Who of American Junior Colleges. Later in life, Janice moved to Atlanta where she spent her last 21 years. She is survived by two sisters, Frances Puckett and Marianne Sipe, as well as three brothers, George, Kyle and Martin Gilley. Janice was known for her beautiful artwork whether it be pen & ink, calligraphy, or colorful fridge magnets; many friends and family have something she created for them. In Atlanta, she sold out at two neighborhood art shows after determining that if you price low people will buy! Janice was an artist at heart in everything she did. Examples include yard work which she renamed “beautification”; decorating a room in creative & artsy ways; and finding shapes of animals in cloud formations. Janice also loved a good game of Boggle and did the daily Jumble. She loved National Parks and managed to see ten of them. As recently as last month she explored New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, at 3:00 P.M. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 311 West 7th St, Columbia TN, 38401. Burial will follow in St. John’s Churchyard at Ashwood. The family will visit with friends Friday from 2:00 P.M. until service time at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. The family suggests memorials to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 311 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
