Jean Carolyn Walker Burt, 90, former long-time resident of Windermere Drive, died Thursday, July 23, 2015 at The Garden of Poplar Estates. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery with family members participating. The family will visit with friends at graveside. Born and reared in the Athendale and Godwin-Chappell communities, she was the daughter of the late George Givens Walker and Elise Fraser Walker. She was a 1943 graduate of Columbia Central High School and attended George Peabody College and Columbia Business College. As a young lady she worked as a secretary at Middle Tennessee Bank where she met her future husband, James Wade Burt. They married October 15, 1947. He preceded her in death May 19, 2011. An avid reader, Mrs. Burt was a long-time supporter of Maury County Public Library and a member of The Students Club. She also served as a volunteer for a number of years with Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a member of Graymere Church of Christ. Survivors include her son, Stephen Wade (Sylvia Thompson) Burt of Columbia; grandsons, Lt. James Thompson (Lt. Michelle) Burt of Alexandria, Virginia, Lucas Wade Burt of Columbia, and Russell Walker Burt of Franklin; cousins, Dianne Morel Bishop, Gail Morel Bishop of Columbia, and Sherry Coleman Sowell of Santa Fe. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staffs of Life Care Center and Poplar Estates for their kindness and care during her illness.
