View Funeral Webcast Betty Jean Duncan Cothran Elliott, 82, former resident of Academy Heights, died Monday, December 17, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Steven and Lillian Capley Tuition, Columbia Academy, 1171 Columbia Academy Circle, Columbia, TN, 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Giles County native was the daughter of the late William Duncan and Etta Riggins Duncan. She was first married to Looney Fulton Cothran who died March 27, 1995 and later married William H. "Bill" Elliott who preceded her in death November 11, 2008. Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker and mother who enjoyed cooking and being of service to others. She formerly attended West 7th St. Church of Christ where she taught the first grade Sunday School Class. She was presently attending Highland Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Patsy (Vance) Capley of Columbia; sons, William Fulton "Bill" (Diane) Cothran and Ronald Dwayne (Karen) Cothran both of Columbia; step-daughters, Faye (Harold) Jackson of Springfield, Eleanor (Bobby) Riddle of Franklin; grandchildren, Becky Stocks (Greg) Cooper of Mt. Pleasant, Melissa Gail Cothran of Etheridge, Jim (Cory) Kelley of Washington, Ryan Fulton (Kati) Cothran of Columbia, Adam "Bo" (Jenni) Payton of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Alexander Capley and Lillian Grace Capley both of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Ireland Kelley, Kayley Cooper; several step-grandchildren; and several step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Freddie Gene Cothran, sisters, Mae Duncan, Margaret Bryant, Elizabeth Blade, and a brother, Charles Duncan. Active pallbearers will be Bo Payton, Greg Cooper, Vance Capley, Larry Duncan, Ryan Cothran and Bryar Payton. Elders and Deacons of Highland Church of Christ will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
