View Funeral Webcast Jean Snell Hewgley, 92, former long-time resident of Park Circle, passed away early Sunday morning, November 25, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. For the past year, she was a resident of Morning Pointe Assisted Living. Visitation with friends will begin Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols concluding with funeral services at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorials to Riverside United Methodist Church, 313 Sixth Avenue, Columbia 38401. She was born in 1920 in Rutherford County, daughter of the late James Roger and Annie Floyd Snell and was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State Teacher's College in Murfreesboro. She married James Burton Hewgley in 1946 and they moved to Columbia where together, with her husband's brother, Tom, opened Hewgley's Music Shop. She taught school in Chapel Hill and at McDowell Elementary School and Whitthorne Junior High School in Columbia, ending her teaching career in 1964. From then, until her retirement she was involved full-time with Hewgley's Music Shop. Mrs. Hewgley was a faithful member of Riverside United Methodist Church since the 1940s. She held several church offices, taught Sunday School, and was always active in the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, on August 13, 1984; four sisters; and a brother. Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne (Don) Freeman of Knoxville; son, Burt (Margaret) Hewgley of Columbia; grandchildren, Mark (Nikki) Freeman, Jenny (Mike) Galbreth; Becky (Andrew) Ramer, Robin (Seth) Estep, Marina (Will) Holloway; and eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers include Mike Boehms, Sammye Boehms, Bill Haynes, Mark Freeman, Seth Estep, Mike Galbreth, Will Holloway, Ronnie Sneed, and Andrew Ramer. Honorary pallbearers are Corey Anderson, Paul Boehms, Gerald Martin, and members of United Methodist Women of Riverside United Methodist Church.
